TurkeysPeople say turkeys are stupid. We're not sure about that. They make a fool out of us nearly every night. They are ingenious escape artists. Every night we herd them into their huts for security, just when we think we have every escape route covered, they find the flaw and wander off.They are hearty eaters. Since birds have no teeth, we need to supply them with grit, or crushed stone, It goes into their gizzard to grind up their food. The more grass they eat, the more grit they need. They're hard on equipment. They pick at anything strange, like a wedding ring. If you don't shush them away, they'll draw blood! We grow one batch of turkeys, a traditional broad breasted white, ready for Thanksgiving. |
